I was listening to a podcast recently and they were talking about a book that discusses changing the word “can’t” in any situation to “won’t” and seeing how your perceptions change.
Can’t is something we say all the time.
“I can’t work late”
“I can’t lose weight”
“I can’t resist that dessert”
Changing any of those to “won’t” changes the entire situation. It gives us ownership of our thoughts and our choices.
I found that curious, so, of course, as I do with many things I hear about or read about, I try it. N of 1, right?
I found that it was uncomfortable.
Worse, I didn’t like it.
It made me face the fact that I can choose to do things but when I don’t want to take responsibility for it, I say that I can’t. Because I won’t. Because I don’t want to.
