Planning Food Ahead… Part 1

Ugh, meal prep?

That’s so tedious!

I don’t have time.

I can’t cook.

I burn water (hi Dad).

My family won’t eat healthy food.

There’s no way I can do those complicated recipes.

Do any of these excuses sound familiar? They do to me. The joke in my family growing up was that I was a health hazard in the kitchen. I could manage to burn water and ruin pots and pans… that stuck with me for a few years after I left home.

Slowly I realized that I could create in the kitchen. Usually in the form of baked good (because, ya know, those taste better…even if they’re slightly irregular). Over the years I’ve acquired cooking as a skill. It was not quick or easy.

However, now there are SO many options to help you.

Don’t have time? Pre-chopped veggies, pre-cooked protein (chicken, burgers, meatballs). Most of us have microwaves.

And let’s face it, that fast food is suspect and was likely reheated several times before you bought and ate it.

Buying fresh and healthier choices is much easier than it used to be. Fruits and vegetables come flash frozen (no preservatives and nutrients are mostly retained), you don’t have to suffer with high sodium canned options or a sad, wilting chicken breast that tastes and looks like cardboard.

Food blogs and grocery chains provide a multitude of options to help you out (visit My Favorite things page to get some ideas).

I know that it can be totally overwhelming to start when you want to make a change or begin to improve your nutrition. I’ve been there.

Where do you start?

How do you go from drive through fast food daily to getting 5+ servings of vegetables in daily?

First, ditch the all-or-nothing mindset. That’s not helping you.

Second, write out where you are now. Keep track of what, when, how much and WHY you’re eating for a few days.

Look at it. Find ONE THING you can improve slightly.

Do that one thing consistently (for a few weeks) until it becomes easier.

Then pick something else.

Practice being kind to yourself when you have an “oops” or a bad day. Learn from each meal and keep moving forward. This can be hard to do on your own but it’s definitely not impossible. You have the power within you to change your life.
